My First Paid Animal Intuitive Reading

A Woman and Her Dog

I could see them clear as day in my mind’s eye: a beautiful Renaissance woman walking next to royal looking dog. She wore a long, flowing dress and one of those triangle-shaped hats with a veil spilling out of the point and floating behind her. They walked along a dirt path with an open field in the foreground and a stone wall behind them. Up ahead was an archway leading to a forest or an orchard – someplace with lots of trees. I knew the dog was her protector; he saw himself as her knight in shining armor and went everywhere with her.

I shared the image with my client and went on to tell her that this could have been a past life that she and her dog Jet shared or it could simply be symbolic of their relationship now. Her response was that both interpretations made sense and it explained why he had been so unhappy lately, the reason for our reading.

A Memorable Milestone

This image is still vivid in my mind, six years after the fact partly because it was so cool (Past lives with your dog? Yes, please!) and partly because this was the very first reading I got paid for when I started my business in January 2011. The client was a classmate of mine so we had many opportunities to chat about it afterward. This image was one of the most powerful parts of the reading for her. It helped her understand her dog better, see him in a new light, and led to a paradigm shift in how she lived her life with him. It was a turning point for him because she now considered his needs in a different way and made plans that benefited both of them. She didn’t plan just for herself and assume he’d be okay anymore; she considered her plans and weighed her options based on their potential impact on her dog. Since the two of them lived alone together, this was an important shift.

What If…?

I was so proud to have made such a positive impact on both their lives. After months of practicing my skills, I finally felt ready to accept money and saw the value of what an intuitive reading could provide for my clients – humans and animals alike.

It wasn’t always fairies and rainbows for me, though. For months I had been working through tons of insecurities. I was worried I wouldn’t get accurate information during readings, that I would say the wrong thing or make a mistake, and that my clients wouldn’t believe me. And what if my intuition just didn’t work at all?!

Avoiding the Pressure

What was different this time was that even though I felt a little extra pressure because I was getting paid, as soon as I began my pre-reading routine to turn on my intuition all the butterflies in my stomach disappeared. I had done roughly four dozen practice readings by now, so I felt confident in my abilities. And I had established a reliable pre-reading routine that worked well for me – I could turn my intuition on and off at will. Once I was “in the zone” the intuitive connection was made and the information flowed through me to my client.

Paying My Dues

It had been a long road to get there: I had graduated from my psychic training program sixth months earlier completely unable to talk to animals. At the time it had been devastating – talking to animals was the whole reason I’d signed up for the year of classes in the first place! But I was determined to talk to animals. Once I got over the initial disappointment, the nose-to-the-grindstone part of me took over. Over the next six months, I had broken through dozens of my inner blocks to becoming a psychic. I practiced doing readings with scores of people and animals. And I had created my own “internship”, logging six hours each week communicating intuitively with insects, fish, mammals and reptiles – and lots and lots of my friends’ dogs and cats. I was finally ready to be the person I had dreamed of being since I was a five year old watching Dr. Doolittle on the movie screen.

Getting Paid (!)

Getting that lovely stack of bills handed to me after that reading said to me: Victory is mine! Although I probably seemed calm, cool, and collected on the outside, inside I had cheerleaders jumping up and down! I did it! I did it! I was elated and relieved at the same time.

What I learned that day was that even though I had natural psychic ability, I still had to put in the hours and work on my skills to reach the level of achievement that warranted getting paid. One of the beliefs I had had to clear was that people are either born psychic or they’re not. I realized that psychic skills are like other skills – when you focus on them you can improve and there’s nothing wrong with you if you need practice and time. Just because you can’t yet doesn’t mean you never will.

If your dream is to talk to animals, please stick with it! You can do it!

3 Keys

My three keys for success:

  1. Get the right mindset by clearing your limiting beliefs.
  2. Put in the time. The more you work on your skills, the better they will get.
  3. Have an accountability buddy or a coach or a regular group that you meet with – getting the social support you need can make all the difference. You don’t have to do this alone!

Almost Ready to Go Pro?

I’m offering a new six-month group coaching program designed to help animal lovers easily hone their natural ability to connect intuitively, energetically, and spiritually with animals and develop the psychic, mindset and business skills and confidence they need to begin an Animal Communication and/or Healing businesses.  Of course, we’ll include these 3 keys but there will also be so much more.
